The
de Havilland Moth Club are once again holding a Charity Flying Weekend at Old Warden
Aerodrome, Bedfordshire, on the 23rd and 24th June 2001 by courtesy of The Shuttleworth
Trust. Pilots from the Moth Club will be giving flights in Tiger Moths and other Moths for
the price of £55 and all money raised goes to charity. The owners, pilots and groundcrew volunteer their
services and aircraft free of charge and the dHMC pays for the fuel so all money raised
goes to charity. Last year over £8000 was raise and donated to various children's'
medical charities.
There is no need to book, just turn up on a
first come, first served, basis. Flying starts at 10.00 each day. There can be a wait of
over an hour at peak times but that time can be spent wandering around the historic
Shuttleworth collection of aircraft and vehicles. Entry to the Shuttleworth collection is
at their normal rates of £6 per person (children free), see the Shuttleworth web site for
more details. Refreshments and food is available in the restaurant next to the shop.
There are other attractions within Shuttleworth
including the Swiss Garden and the English School of Falconry and accommodation is often
available in the mansion so why not make a weekend of it. Again, details available on the
Shuttleworth web site.
The Teague Challenge
Mike Teague is a dHMC member based in Canada
who persuades his friends to sponsor young people to fly during the Charity Weekend rather
than give him a birthday present. This sponsorship is now an important part of this annual
event and through it many young people have had the opportunity to fly in a Tiger Moth.
If you would like to sponsor a young person,
please contact dHMC HQ, details below. When all the sponsorship offers in, local schools
in the area are contacted and places offered.
